Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Clinical Nutritionist Specialists (CNSs) and Dietitians share many similarities. Both have advanced education in anatomy and physiology, as well as the biochemistry of nutrition pathways. All CNSs hold a Master of Science in Nutrition. Some states require Dietitians to have completed a Master's Degree program in Dietetics, but some do not. CNSs must attain 1000 clinical hours of supervised practice to acquire certification. Dietitians must obtain between 800-1000 clinical hours dependent on their program of study. CNSs are trained to read and interpret lab results from a perspective of optimal health rather than simply recognizing metabolic dysfunction alone, while most Dietetics programs do not include education on lab work above and beyond basics. Typically CNSs take a more holistic approach to health, addressing areas like high-quality sleep, environmental toxins, stress management, and hormone health. Clinical Nutritionists also have exclusive training in evidenced-based nutrition in the content areas of Nutritional Therapeutics, Pharmacognosy, and Clinical use of Supplements and Herbs.
